Beshara's main inspiration is the Andalusian mystic Muhyi al-Din Ibn 'Arabi (d.1240), possibly the most influential thinker of the second half of Islamic history. Ibn ‘Arabi's teaching was brought to Britain by Bulent Rauf (d.1987), a descendant of the Ottoman elite, and discovered there by counterculture youth searching for new spiritual ways. The Nightingale in the Garden of Love: The Poems of Uftade
A translation of the spiritual poems of the great Ottoman Sufi master, Mehmed Muhyiddin Uftade (1490-1580).
Uftade was born and lived in Bursa, a hugely important spiritual centre at the height of the Ottoman Empire.
He was founder of the Jelvetiyye dervish order, through the training of his famous disciple, Aziz Mahmud Hudayi.
These poems express Uftade's spiritual quest in simple, direct language and are presented here for the first time in English.
