About the author

Born in Istanbul, 1916, Professor Halil Inalcik taught the history of Turkey at the universities of Ankara (1942-1972), Chicago (1972-1986), Princeton (visiting 1967) and Harvard (visiting 1992). Professor Inalcik is a member of the Turkish, American, British and Serbian Academies and has been the recipient of eight honorary doctorates.
