From the publisher

A contemporary political travelogue through the lands of the Turkic peoples -- 140 million people in more than two dozen countries stretching from China to the United States. Based on the author's two decades of reporting for publications like The Wall Street Journal, it is an original new look at a long-neglected but now increasingly important and coherent part of the world.

About the Author

Born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1959, Hugh Pope read Persian and Arabic at Oxford University and speaks Turkish. He has written from 30 countries during 25 years of travels in the Turkic world and broader Middle East, reporting for the Independent, Los Angeles Times, BBC and Reuters. For the past eight years, he has run The Wall Street Journal's news bureau in Istanbul.

With his ex-wife Nicole Pope, he is the author of TURKEY UNVEILED: a History of Modern Turkey.
