As far as first impressions go, the latest title in Jason Goodwin's Ottoman detective series is certainly more foreboding than its precursors.
The Janissary Tree sounded fellable;
The Snake Stone a none-too-threatening curiosity; as for
The Bellini Card, well, who doesn't like prosecco, peaches and birthday post?
An Evil Eye sounds much more ominous, not least for its singularity: as much
arrr as
nazar.
For those of us with imaginations that think of pirates at the slightest of promptings this fast-paced page-turner does contain some promise. The year is 1839 and Fevzi Ahmet Pasa, Admiral of the Ottoman Navy, has just handed the fleet over to Egypt, giving the Russians all the excuse they would need to sail down the straits. There's something fishy in the water on Büyükada and there is even a chase and getaway on the island ferry early on. Meanwhile back in Istanbul all seems in flux. A new Sultan, a new palace, and a new bridge over the Golden Horn. It all amounts to another mystery for Yashim the eunuch investigator, perhaps fiction's most unlikely private dick...(
