- What’s On
Turkey’s biggest film festival returns for its 37th installment with a diverse and in-depth programme. The 210 films by 218 directors run the gamut from world cinema to cult classics to contemporary Turkish releases. There will also be a slew of festival talks with guest filmmakers, concerts and other special events.
There are a handful of competitions throughout the festival. The International Competition, with the theme ‘New Perspectives in Cinema’, features 11 films from 11 different countries, including Iran, Poland, Qatar and the Dominican Republic. Other competitions include the Human Rights in Cinema Competition, the National Competition featuring only Turkish films and the National Documentary Competition.
In keeping with the times, the festival has a special section emphasising women called ‘No More Flowers’. The 10 films featured all have strong women protagonists and hail from countries that include Belgium, Georgia and Argentina.
The festival will also host a series in tribute to Swedish director Ingmar Bergman on the centenary of his birth, with nine of his celebrated films screening in Istanbul. If you haven’t yet seen classics like Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal and Persona on a big screen, this is your chance.
The newly renovated Yapı Kredi Culture Centre will serve as the festival centre and host press meetings, panel discussions, festival talks, seminars and other related events.
Films will be screened at nine movie theatres: Atlas and Beyoğlu movie theatres, as well as the Pera Museum in Tepebaşı, Rexx cinema and Kadıköy Cinema in Kadıköy, Cinemaximum Zorlu Center in Gayrettepe and Cinemaximum City’s in Nişantaşı.
Tulip Card holders will benefit from advance sales and special discounts up to 25% for festival tickets. During the advance sale period, tickets can be purchased at the Atlas and Rexx movie theatres, as well as from the Tulip Card Communications Centre (+90 216 556 98 56), and on the Biletix website and Biletix sales points. The advance sales period begins March 20 for Black and White Tulip Card members and March 21 for Red and Yellow Tulip Card members.
