- What’s On
For its 24th edition, the Akbank Jazz Festival brings musicians from Turkey and abroad working in the jazz genre and beyond to Istanbul audiences. With 30 international and major Turkish artists and a plethora of other local talent performing in over 40 venues of all sizes, there’s something for every jazz – or really music – lover. This is a much more accessible festival than the Istanbul Jazz Festival in many ways and the artists are often more underground and musically adventurous.
The headliner is the English jazz-pop singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum and other highlights include American neo-soul singer Bilal, China Moses, who is the daughter of jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, the vocalist José James who combines modern jazz, hip hop, soul and drum’n’bass, the renowned jazz trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and Lebanese singer Yasmine Hamdan.
As 2014 marks the 600th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Poland, a number of Polish musicians perform. The composer and clarinetist Wacław Zimpel will take the stage with his project ‘Hera’ and pianist and film music composer Leszek Możdżer, considered the most important jazz musician in the Polish jazz scene after Tomasz Stanko, will also perform.
There is also an interesting programme of workshops and panels on topics such as writing on jazz, women in jazz, playing drums and tap dancing.
