- What’s On
For its 25th edition, the Akbank Jazz Festival will bring both international and Turkish performers to venues all over the city, while also holding a number of events on university and high school campuses.
While there are many exciting offerings, the performance of Manu Katché on Thursday, October 22, is of particular note. Katché, who is known for combining African rhythms with classical drumming, is considered as one of the most important drummers in the world. He will be sharing the stage with Norwegian contrabassist Ellen Andrea Wang.
Other highlights include guitarist John Scofield, one the most important composers of modern jazz, and Grammy-winning, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, a dean at Berklee College of Music, taking the stage together. Carmen Lundy, a strong vocalist and creative composer, will be performing at The Seed, a little known venue that has some of the best acoustics in the city. Indie music lovers, meanwhile, will be particularly excited to see Scottish band Belle and Sebastian perform at the Volkswagen Arena.
There will also be a number of free panels and workshops on offer that tackle subjects ranging from the roots of European jazz to the history of this particular festival.
