August 14, 2013
16.00–19.00
STOP PRESS. A note from the organisers: ‘Unfortunately, the Sirkeci–Yedikule train line was closed a few days ago.’ You are advised either to take the 80T bus from Taksim to Yedikule or (even faster), the tram to Topkapı (not the Topkapı Palace, but the gates in the land walls) and a taxi from the Holiday Inn to Yedikule Kapısı.

To protect the 1600-year old bostans (gardens) surrounding the land walls of the Old City in Yedikule threatened by development, a group of environmentalists, archaeologists, architects, politicians and lawyers have formed an energetic lobby group, Yedikule Bostanları.

They have invited Dr Chantel White, an archaeobotanist and Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA, to come and do an assessment of the land around Yedikule and write a research report that can be used to lobby the relevant groups.

Besides writing this report on her brief sojourn in Istanbul, she will also be conducting a special three-hour workshop focusing on the questions of how ancient plants can be identified, what modern gardens can tell us about the past and how are archaeobotanist studies relevant to Yedikule Gardens in particular.

The workshop will be in English with Turkish translation.
