The Ancient Languages in Anatolia Summer Program will take place at the Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in Beyoğlu, Istanbul from July 23rd till August 17th. The program offers a comprehensive introduction to the Hittite and Akkadian languages, and the cuneiform script in which they were recorded.

The Assyrian merchants trading in Anatolia provide the earliest known historical documents in a dialect of Akkadian, known as Old Assyrian, in the Middle Bronze Age. The kingdom established by the Hittites preserved an archive of Hittite and Akkadian texts throughout their centuries of existence between the 17th and the 12th centuries BCE. Following the end of the Late Bronze Age, the Assyrian Kingdom expanded into Anatolia and also left records shedding light on Anatolian history.

The program aims to develop the skills necessary to explore these earliest historical records of Anatolia. The aim is to equip the students with a basic knowledge of the Hittite and Akkadian languages, a basic knowledge of the cuneiform script, and the ability to follow scholarly editions of cuneiform texts using primary Assyriological and Hittitological resources.

Applications are due April 16, 2018. For more information on how to apply, click here.
