Koç University invites graduate and advanced undergraduate students to take part in a new intensive summer programme on the ancient languages of Anatolia. The course, which will be held at the Research Centre for Anatolian Civilisations (RCAC), offers a comprehensive introduction to the Hittite and Akkadian languages, and the cuneiform script in which they were recorded.

The Assyrian merchants trading in Anatolia provide the earliest known historical documents in a dialect of Akkadian, known as Old Assyrian, in the Middle Bronze Age. The kingdom established by the Hittites preserved an archive of Hittite and Akkadian texts throughout their centuries of existence between the 17th and the 12th centuries BCE. Following the end of the Late Bronze Age, the Assyrian Kingdom expanded into Anatolia and also left records shedding light on Anatolian history.

The programme aims to develop the skills necessary to explore these earliest historical records of Anatolia. The aim is to equip the students with a basic knowledge of the Hittite and Akkadian languages, a basic knowledge of the cuneiform script, and the ability to follow scholarly editions of cuneiform texts using primary Assyriological and Hittitological resources.

The programme takes place from August 15 – September 4. Applications are due on April 30. For more information on how to apply, click here.
