- What’s On
The third edition of the ‘Bashibazouk’ exhibitions aims to showcase new works from established artists as well as to highlight new talents. According to the gallery owner and director Kerimcan Güleryüz, this new instalment is ‘not an endeavour to make some sort of prophesy of things to come – there is no grandstanding about the unforeseeable future – but rather a simple declaration of presence and continuity’.
‘Bashibazouk’ takes its title from the term used for certain irregular soldiers in the Ottoman army who functioned as scouts to destabilise the opposing army until the 19th century, when they were disbanded for disruptive behaviour. In an attempt to re-visit the concept as a satire of the human condition in contemporary culture, the artists who were selected for this exhibition all display an exploratory and risk-taking streak in their works.
The show will feature brand new works from SENA, as well as from Erhan Özışıklı and Ali Taptık, the recipient of the first Elliott Erwitt Fellowship. New and previously unseen works from Nathalie Mamboury and Helio Leon will also be on display.
