The lakeside town of Lausanne is in every Turkish history book, as it was here a treaty was signed in 1923 at the end of the War of Independence which established the modern country of Turkey. In 2008, Switzerland gave Turkey the desk on which the Lausanne Peace Treaty was signed. The agreement defined Turkey’s borders and concluded the exchange of populations between Turkey and Greece. Three years later the new republic adopted the Swiss Civil Code, and in 1936 the Montreux Convention granted Turkey full sovereignty over the Dardanelles Straits and the Bosphorus.
