- What’s On
Romanian-born, Berlin-based artist Carla Mercedes Hihn has been living in Istanbul for the past six months (supported by the Berlin Senate Residency Grant) to construct a collection of works based on the diverse layers of the city. She documented these through photographs which she then hung from the ceiling at the exhibition space.
The title of her exhibition ‘EXIT’ has a double meaning. Coming into the gallery, the viewer begins their exploration of the city through Hihn’s images; going out of the gallery, the viewer walks into the real-life city – both are exits. And, by leaving Berlin and entering Istanbul and then by exiting Istanbul and entering Berlin, Hihn herself is also the subject of ‘exits’.
A few weeks before opening, the protests which broke out in Istanbul gave Hinh’s work another dimension. She decided to invite the audience to participate in her exhibition by sharing their thoughts and feelings through letters, photographs and drawings that they are encouraged to add to the gallery’s walls.
