Family and Kinship among Slaves in Byzantium in the Sixth through the Twelfth Century

Dr. Nathan Leidholm gives a lecture at the Byzantine Studies Research Centre on the ways slaves in Byzantine society were able to form bonds and to live as families. This is part of a larger project that puts a particular focus on social relations and cultural attitudes surrounding family. Dr. Leidholm will delve into how these ties were represented in Byzantine literature, theology and law.

Dr. Leidholm earned his PhD in Byzantine History from the University of Chicago in June 2016
