Flight (IST, JFK, LAX, LHR)

October 29, 2016 – February 19, 2017

Borusan Contemporary, Rumelihisarı Mahallesi, Baltalimanı Hisar Caddesi No 5, Perili Köşk, 34470 Sarıyer – Istanbul

A data-driven animated application, Flight makes art out of airspace. Visitors will see a real-time vision of what populates the sky, ranging from the real (airplanes landing and taking off, birds, satellites, clouds, rain, wind) to the less credible (UFOs).

This site-specific installation records the airspace around four airports: Istanbul (IST), London Heathrow (LHR), Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (JFK). By building a database using real-time data from FlightAware, eBird, weather.com, as well as local sensors, news sources and censuses, the application reflects on the complex skies above our heads.

The project was spearheaded by the visual artist Marina Zurkow and Paul Paradiso, with help from Sam Brenner and Sarah Rothberg.

To observe Istanbul’s airspace, particularly our feathered friends soaring the skies, head to Çamlıca Hill on the Asian side.
