Ankara: From Pioneering Modernism to Revivalist Mimicry and Fake Futurism

July 3, 2015 – October 31, 2015

Erimtan Archaeology and Art Museum, Kale Mahallesi, Gözcü Sokak No:10, Altındağ, Ankara

Murat Germen’s solo exhibition uses panoramas and documentary photography to compare and contrast Ankara’s urban landscape as it is now to what it was in the past. Germen’s photographs show how the recent construction boom in the city has focused on high-rise buildings and reviving a so-called Ottoman past at the expense of Ankara’s cultural heritage – namely its pioneering modernism – and green spaces.

This critical look at the latest construction frenzy in Turkey’s capital city, which has been described as an ‘urban transformation’ by the government, illustrates how this building activity was seen as a profit-making endeavour rather than as an effort to create better urban environments.
