- What’s On
The Gola Association is a highly active culture, arts and ecology NGO which is concerned with the cultural heritage of the Eastern Black Sea region. Each year, they put on folk concerts and festivals aimed at fostering the music, art and ecological treasures in the area, especially in the yayla (highland) regions.
This year’s ‘Green Yayla Culture, Arts and Environment Festival’ is centred around the theme of ‘Bees and Traditional Beekeeping’. Now in its 8th year, Gola has dedicated this year’s festival to the memory of the late Ilyas Can, a traditional beekeeper from the region who died in a tragic accident last year.
Local people and festival participants will meet in the villages of Arhavi and Rize, and can participate in – or simply enjoy – beekeeping workshops, lectures, open air discussions, dance workshops, documentary film screenings, concerts and art shows. Beekeeping workshops and lectures will be on topics such as how to extract honey from bees, prepare food with honey and how to construct a traditional bee hive. The Kardeş Türküler music group is giving a concert to celebrate their 20th anniversary at the foothills of the Kaçkar Mountains, perhaps the most lush and beautiful mountain ranges in Turkey on August 16. There will also be a LandArt exhibition curated by Denizhan Özer on August 17.
The full programme will be available from the festival’s website soon or email the Gola Association and they can send you a copy.
