I-You-They: A Century of Artist Women at Meşher is a tribute to the artist women who lived and worked in Turkey between roughly the 1850s and the 1950s. Curated by Deniz Artun with the help of Çiğdem Simavi, this exhibition features the women artists who often went unrecognized yet were pioneers and important contributors to the development of art in Turkey. Visitors are invited to experience over 200 works by more than 100 artists, only a few of whom are known internationally, such as Fahrelnissa Zeid and Yildiz Moran.
There is no ‘school’ or ‘period’ or even a ‘group’ that defines these women artists, and you would be hard-pressed to find most of their names in textbooks on Turkish art. I-You-They tells their stories, through their artworks, and gives them their much-deserved spotlight.
