- What’s On
This event has been cancelled.
The late Sevinç Tevs will be honoured with a special concert, in which established and emerging Turkish musicians will pay tribute to Turkey’s first lady of jazz. Tevs was instrumental in showing the world that Turkey had a jazz presence, and performed everywhere from Greece, Italy, Switzerland and the UK to Egypt to the Jazz Festival in New York in the 1950s and 1960s. And her husky voice, slightly hinting of her Turkish roots, resonated with audiences everywhere.
Among these artists will be Tevs’s daughter, prominent singer, composer and producer Şehrazat; a pioneer of jazz who shared the stage with Tevs, bassist Selçuk Sun; Muazzez Abacı, a classical Turkish music vocalist who has achieved considerable success with the Arabesk genre; Fatih Erkoç, a jazz and pop singer and trombonist; harmonica player Hasan Kocamaz; trumpeter Muvaffak Falay; and Sibel Köse, Ayşe Gencer and Elif Çağlar, three young jazz singers who are following in Tevs’ footsteps. The Istanbul Superband, led by Ayctan Teztel, will accompany this group of musicians from Turkey’s jazz scene – past and present.
