The collection of the one of the great dealers in Islamic art is to be auctioned by Christies in Paris. Joseph Soustiel was born in Salonika into a family of antique dealers in 1904. His own career would take him to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul during the last years of the Ottoman Empire and on to Paris, where he married his wife Irène, the daughter of his former partner, in 1935, and established a famous gallery at 146 boulevard Haussman, which only closed in 2004. Their daughter, Laure Soustiel, continues the tradition from a gallery in Aix en Provence. Joseph Soustiel was one of the architects of the first exhibition in Paris dedicated to Turkish art, in 1953, and the Sadberk Hanım Museum was one of the beneficiaries of his remarkble eye.
