Luys i Luso: A Cinematic Journey through Armenian Music

March 24, 2017 – April 30, 2017

DEPO, Tütün Deposu, Lüleci Hendek Caddesi No.12, Tophane, Istanbul

This audio-visual installation made by the Armenian-American filmmakers Emily Mkrtichian and Alex Igidbashian, in collaboration with the Berlin-based Studio Ondé, documents Tigran Hamasyan’s Luys i Luso project. An Armenian jazz prodigy, Hamasyan re-imagined and rearranged sacred Armenian music from the 5th to 20th centuries for piano and voices. He then travelled together with the Yerevan State Chamber and performed these compositions at 12 churches scattered across Armenia and Turkey. The aim of this musical journey was to breath new life into these churches and lands with sound and music.

The filmmakers accompanied Hamasyan and the choir on the tour, and the installation consists of the images and recordings they collected. The work recreates the visual, sound and sensory experience of these intimate performances using projection technologies, sound design and animations.
