Mehmet Ali Uysal

September 11, 2013 – October 26, 2013

Pi Artworks Istanbul, Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa Mahallesi, Mumhane Caddesi No. 48, Beyoğlu

In his third solo show, Mersin-born artist Mehmet Ali Uysal presents his unusual ‘paintings’ – but not as we know them. Uysal experiments with the perception of the viewer by asking the viewer to enter a stark white room illuminated by fluorescent lights. At first it seems there is only blank walls, but then the embedded-into-the-wall works slowly come into view largely thanks to the renaissance frames of different forms and sizes.

The idea of ‘space’ and the concept of the ‘white cube’ are significant elements in Uysal’s oeuvre. With his embedded blank frames, Uysal questions the changing value of the ‘painting’; the power of art galleries, museums and the art market in general; and the relationship of all these elements to the work of art.
