Picturing a Lost Empire

An Italian Lens on Byzantine Art in Anatolia, 1960-2000

June 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018

ANAMED Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, İstiklal Caddesi No. 181, Merkez Han, Beyoğlu, İstanbul

This exhibition, a collaboration between Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) and Sapienza University of Rome, presents the result of collaborative research. Over the course of the second half of the 20th century, Italian art historians ventured across Turkey to explore Byzantine art and collect photographs. They came away with a large selection of previously unpublished archival photographs of extraordinary monuments preserved in Anatolia. The photographs in the exhibition focus on four historical regions of Turkey.
