Notre Dame de Sion Fransız Lisesi, Cumhuriyet Caddesi No. 127, Harbiye, Istanbul 34373

The French poet, ever curious traveller, painter and photographer Pierre Loti lived in Istanbul from 1903 to 1905. Like many before and since, the ‘troubadour des réalités humble’ was beguiled by the city. An exhibition of his black-and-white and sepia photographs of everyday neighbourhood scenes is at the Notre Dame de Sion French High School, next to Istanbul’s senior Roman Catholic church. A dreamy glimpse of Istanbul through the eyes of France’s most celebrated Orientalist, complete with re-creations of Lotiesque rooms, which visitors are encouraged to lounge in.
