- What’s On
This event has been cancelled.
The Sanlıkol Hybrid Jazz Orchestra will perform pieces from their upcoming album, to be released in June, led by composer Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol. They will be joined by one of the most important composers in Turkey, a pioneer of fretless guitars, Erkan Oğur (he invented the first fretless classical guitar in 1976).
Mehmet Sanlıkol studied Western classical piano, and is dedicated to directing projects in which ‘music connects disparate ethnic and religious groups through devotion, celebration and joy’. He formed the Sanlıkol Hybrid Jazz Orchestra with this philosophy in mind. Erkan Oğur has influenced many musicians with his compositions combining the sounds of Turkish folk music, classical music and ancient traditional music, and is regarded as the master of the kopuz (an ancient fretless string instrument) and bağlama (a stringed instrument similar to a saz) lutes.
