A symposium organised in cooperation with the Women’s Museum Istanbul, the Gender and Women’s Studies Forum at Sabancı University, and Koç University’s Center for Gender Studies to commemorate Turkey’s first female travel and war photographer, Semiha Es (1912–2012), who was most renowned for her coverage of the Korean War.
The symposium will host panels and round-table discussions focusing on female photographers in the 21st century. Topics up for discussion will include war, the female body, violence, memory, the photographic gaze from a gender perspective, and documentary and art photography. Participants will also present their work.
International photographers taking part are Ami Vitale, Yunghi Kim, Diana Blok, Vera Lentz, Heidi Levine, Mitsu Maeda, Shadi Ghadirian, Lucia Nimcova, Lucy Azubuike, Tzeli Hadjidimitriou, Eman Mohammed Darkhalil, Fatou Kande Songhar, Lynsey Addario, Nomusa Makhubu, Ayperi Karabuda Ecer and Fiona Rogers. Turkish photographers will include Ahu Antmen, Laleper Aytek, Silva Bingaz, Melisa Önel, Sebla Selin Ok, Bikem Ekberzade, Serra Akcan, Gülşin Ketenci, Şenay Öztürk, Şehlem Sebik, as well as some promising young photographers such as Begüm Koçum, Cemre Yeşil, Dilara Arısoy, Pınar Gediközer, Larissa Araz, Senem Sinem, Gözde Türkkan and Zeynep Kayan.
