November 6, 2018
Exhibition free and open to the public, 3-5 November

Sotheby’s New Bond Street, 34-35 New Bond Street, London W1A 2AA, UK

The sale offers a rich and varied selection of collectible carpets and rugs, including several exemplary classical Chinese and East Turkestan weavings.

Notable works include the Larsson lion-dog medallion with ‘hundred antiques’ dais carpet and the Scofield Thayer dais carpet, together with several other rare and splendid works from Ninghsia, Khotan and Kashgar.

The weaving traditions of Turkey are represented by a Selendi ‘Bird’ rug fragment, and examples of ‘Transylvanian’, ‘double-niche’ and column niche rugs, a rare fragment of an Oushak carpet with cloudbands and several examples of early Anatolian village rugs from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Several magnificent and rare examples from the Caucasus are also on offer, including the Wher Chajli rug and Schurmann red-ground Karagashli.

The carpet traditions of Persia and India are represented by both 17th-century fragments and examples of later room sized carpets, together offering a broad choice of pieces for collectors and decorators alike.
