This is the first solo show of Maro Michalakakos in Istanbul. The title of the show draws its inspiration from the poetry of William Blake and alludes to the idea that all experiences are colored by one’s perception of the world and their place in it. Most of the works on display are created using her unique process of cutting away velvet with a scalpel, almost an inverted sculpture.
The central work of the show, titled ‘Eye, I’, is a soft red velvet couch with eyes carved into it, illustrating how people look at things throughout their lives from different perspectives. Moreover, it resembles a psychoanalyst couch, a reference to the process of knowing thyself by discovering one’s coordinates in space, one’s bearings and position in relation to their surroundings.
