- What’s On
The Istanbul Arts and Culture Foundation (IKSV) is organising another unique performance for Istanbul audiences this spring. Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera will be staged at the Zorlu Performing Arts Centre by the Berliner Ensemble, one of Europe’s leading theatre companies.
The Threepenny Opera is Brecht’s contemporary adaptation of English writer John Gay’s 1728 ballad opera The Beggar’s Opera. Regarded as one of the milestones in theatre history, The Threepenny Opera provides a socialist critique of the capitalist system, questions issues of morality and displays the horrors of war, while never compromising on its rich musicality and wit. Brecht is one of the leading 20th-century German poets, playwrights and theatre directors. He founded the Berliner Ensemble and is also recognised as the creator of epic theatre.
In this performance the Berliner Ensemble will be directed by Robert Wilson. Renowned for his original stage aesthetics and his mastery in creating diverse worlds in his productions, Wilson once again interweaves dance, movement, light, text and design to the utmost effect. Kurt Weill’s music for the play, which has become an essential part of popular culture, will be performed live by an orchestra.
The performance will be in German with Turkish surtitles.
