Dr. Nicholas Melvani of the Institute of Historical Research in Athens will give a lecture on the monasteries of late Byzantine era Constantinople. His talk will delve into the position of 15th century Constantinopolitan monasteries as they appear in literary and archival sources, functioning as imperial foundations, pilgrimage destinations and landowning institutions. He focuses on three particular monasteries that served as major shrines and international pilgrimage destinations: the monastery of the Hodegoi, the monastery of the Virgin of Zoodochos Pege and the monastery of Saint Theodosia.
