Venetians in the Levant

from Constantinople to Aleppo with Philip Mansel

January 20, 2020
Doors open at 18:30 for 18:45pm GMT on Monday
Tickets cost £20 and can be bought online here.

Society of Antiquaries, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, W1J 0BE

Philip Mansel will focus on the peaceful connections between Venetian merchants and travellers and their Ottoman neighbours (Muslim, Christian and Jewish) in Constantinople, Aleppo and other cities, after the Ottoman conquest. When Venetians were not fighting the Ottoman Empire, they were trading with it, writing about it, or in the case of the last court painter of the Ottoman sultans, Fausto Zonaro (who lived in Constantinople in 1891-1910), painting it.

This is a joint event with the Levantine Heritage Foundation.
