Philip Mansel will focus on the peaceful connections between Venetian merchants and travellers and their Ottoman neighbours (Muslim, Christian and Jewish) in Constantinople, Aleppo and other cities, after the Ottoman conquest. When Venetians were not fighting the Ottoman Empire, they were trading with it, writing about it, or in the case of the last court painter of the Ottoman sultans, Fausto Zonaro (who lived in Constantinople in 1891-1910), painting it.
