- What’s On
This is Bilge Friedlaender’s first solo show since she passed away in 2000. Many of the works on display in the exhibition, which is curated by Işın Önol and the artist’s daughter Mira Friedlaender, have never been shown in Turkey. The works centre on Friedlaender’s rigorous investigation of created forms such as ‘line’ and ‘square’ as expressions of the relationship between humans and nature.
The exhibition focuses on a specific period (1971-1983) of Friedlaender’s production, during which time she researched the infinite possibilities of a line, a torn line and a square that defies gravity. Even though she did not identify herself as a minimalist, the artist developed a modest visual language utilising rather simple materials and meticulously continued her almost experimental search during this decade. She was in constant dialogue with her own work through her writing. Engaging with the universal experiences of gravity, horizon and perceptions of duality, Friedlaender created a body of work that is even more relevant today.
