The Eastern Black Sea

The mountains between Samsun and Hopa trap moisture-heavy sea air, creating a greeen fringe along this alpine corner of Turkey. The rural architecture is often compared to that of Central Europe, but here you’ll also find Byzantine churches and monasteries galore near Trabzon, tea fields in Rize and the Turkish equivalent of bagpipes in the Kaçkar mountains. Driving inland from Trabzon you come to Bayburt, an area almost unexplored by tourists but home to plenty of historic attractions and surely one of the most remote contemporary art museums in the world.
