An incredible place for a hiking holiday, the Kaçkar are home to a staggering array of flora and fauna (from bears to butterflies), summer festivals in the highest villages and simply stunning scenery. The tallest peak, Mt Kaçkar, is around 4000m and makes a satisfying two-day climb from the nearest non-canvas accommodation. Kate Clow’s book on the range is an indispensable guide.
The town of Yüsüfeli is the launch point for expeditions on the southern side of the range and a good base for white water rafting on the Çoruh river. Daily busses from Erzurum depart at 09:00, 13:30 and 16:00. The journey takes about 3 hours. A shuttle runs from Trabzon airport at 07:30 daily.
Dolmuş (minibuses) run up the bumpy track to the pansıyons in Yaylalar, at an altitude of about 2000m. The staff at Kaçkar Pansiyon in Yaylalar are always happy to help. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org; tel: +90 466 832 20 47 or +90 538 306 45 64.
