Since 1943 Yazgan have been making wine near Turgutlu, a short drive East of Izmir and close to the ancient Lydian capital of Sardis. Kevin Gould rates their Mahra particularly highly, saying: ‘Aegean Sauvignon Blanc can sometimes be a little like being stuck inside a candy factory. Mahra adds 15 percent Sultaniye to this blend which, on paper at least, should only add to its sweet burden. Instead, sensitive winemaking has allowed the Sultaniye to temper the other grape’s blowsiness, and added another element, which you might call sweet celery. This wine will make firm friends with spicy food.’
