Osmanli Saraylarinda Sanayi ve Teknoloji Araclari (Industrial and technological tools in the Ottoman Palace)

The Imperial Stables

Yildiz Park
Ortakoy

October 31
- December 31
2004

Rummaging through the basement of Dolmabahçe Palace, the National Palaces have produced a cabinet of wonders from the early industrial age: telephones, radiators of every shape and pattern, stoves galore, handsomely veneered stereographic units, all manner of gardening tools for use by the 300 gardeners who once tended the grounds of Yildiz Palace. All have been beautifully cleaned up and restored. Abdulhamid II was passionate about innovation and modernisation, and was for ever arranging exhibitions to encourage progress. This exhibition is in the newly restored stable block at the top of Yildiz Park (if approaching by taxi, ask for the Yildiz Porcelain Factory entrance on the road behind the park linking Barbaros Bulvari and Ortakoy). The stable fittings themselves have long since disappeared, but the building is handsome nonetheless. Combine the exhibition with tea at the Malta Kiosk and a walk round the most haunting time warp in Istanbul, the Chalet Kiosk. (see Cornucopia 22). Both catalogue and information about the tools are sadly only in Turkish, but English notes should soon be available as well.

An extraordinary collection of costumes ranging from the late Sevgi Gonul's eighties cocktail dress to that worn by the Empress Josephine, and all created entirely from paper. Of quite exquisite beauty, this is a show not to be missed.

Modern Art

Istanbul is justly proud of this magnificent new museum. Housed in a converted warehouse on the water's edge looking out to the entrance to the Bosphorus and Topkapi Palace, the museum opened on December 11.
It is amazing how much modern Turkish art suddenly comes of age when seen in a decent space. Hats off to the Eczacibasis, whose brainchild this venture is, and to the PM for letting it happen. Watch this space a a spectacular series of exhibitions.

Industrial Museum

This 1973 Riva Olympic, one of the countless gems in this giant attic / toyshop, which has two sophisticated restaurants to boot. This sprawling waterside establishment covers model steam engines, model marine engines, model hot air and internal combustion engines, model stem locomotives; scientific instruments, aviation, navigation, cinema, printing, advertising boards etc. It includes an olive oil factory, a submarine, Sultan Abdülaziz's railway carriage and more. In short, it has quietly joined the list of Istanbul must-sees.

Paintings and calligraphy

The SSM is Istanbul's newest museum and exhibition space with excellent calligraphy and a mixed display of 19th- and early 20th-century Turkish paintings in the Western manner. On show here (left, from top): Fausto Zonaro 1854-1907, Hoca Ali Riza' 1864-1935, and Ibrahim Çalli 1864-1935.

Nazan Olcer, for 30 years curator of the Museum of Islamic and Turkish Art, better known as the Ibrahim Pasha Museum, has recently been appointed curator of the SSM. Her achievments at the Ibrahim Pasha included landmark exhibitions on Iznik Pottery, Ottoman Calligraphy and Ottoman art in Polish collections (1999). All these were achieved in spite of the lamentable attitude displayed towards art and culture by successive Turkish governments ( In 2002, the post of Minister of Culture was abolished. Mrs Olcer's departure from the museum was part of the government's scandalous policy of 'retiring' Turkey's entire 'kadro' of experienced curators in favour of inexperienced poilitical appointees. The winner? In this particular case, the Sabanci family - watch this space! Mrs Olcer has some fabulous plans up her sleeve.
