Celebrated Turkish violinist Cihat Aşkın’s album İstanbulin suggests a modern interpretation of old dance tunes, Balkan songs, sirtos and longas meticuously selected from famous masterpieces of the Tanzimat era, as well as from the 20th century. Some of the tracks may well be remembered from the soundtracks of 1970s Yeşilçam movies, yet Aşkın’s attempt to bring such pieces into the modern violin repertoire deserves a standing ovation. – Şule Bilgin
