The Nardis Jazz Club, situated in an old Genoese building in a side street close to the Galata Tower, opened its doors in October 2002 and is Istanbul’s oldest venue of its kind, having. With a stage, a ground-floor seating area and a balcony, it has a maximum seating capacity of 120. Customers can have meals served at their tables. The club, which is named after a composition by Miles Davis, is owned by jazz musician Önder Focan and his wife Zuhal, the publisher and editor of the city’s Jazz magazine.
Jazz concerts are held every night of the week except Sunday. Seating is determined according to the order in which members of the audience arrive, starting at 20:30. Reservations are kept until 21. 15 (i.e., 15 minutes before the music starts). Tables for two are limited. All other tables are shared.

Tuesday May 13
Vocalist Şenay Ocak studied jazz at Bahçeşehir University, and subsequently took part in projects with the Academic Symphony Orchestra at Hacettepe University, Ankara. She is currently carrying out research into jazz at the Musicology Department of the Istanbul State Conservatoire. On this occasion she will be accompanied by Aytaç Aydoğdu (trumpet, vocals), Önder Focan (guitar) and Can Tutuğ (vibraphone).

Jef Giansily & Kağan Yıldız & Burak Cihangirli
The French pianist Jef Giansily, whose latest album was ‘Sketches’ (2009), is resident in Istanbul. Having re-formed his trio, he is now joined once again by Kağan Yıldız on double bass and Burak Cihangirli on drums.

Singer İpek Dinç, a graduate of the Istanbul University Faculty of Chemistry, began her musical career in 20115. She first came to prominence when she won the Nardis Club’s competition for young jazz vocalists in 2009 and was subsequently invited to sing at the Nömme Jazz Festival in Tallinn, Estonia. She is to be accompanied on this occasion by Anıl Şallıel (tenor saxophone), Adem Gülşen (piano), Baran Say (double bass) and Erhan Seçkin (drums). Her repertoire consists of R&B as well as jazz standards.

Singer and pianist Eylül Ergül studied classical piano at the Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatoire, subsequently receiving tuition from Alexander Tenaglia, Krassimir Taskov, Marylene Mouquet, Başar Can Kıvrak, Gökhan Aybulus, Muhiddin Durruoğlu and Hüseyin Sermet. In 2017 she returned to the Hacettepe University Conservatoire, this time to study jazz piano; meanwhile, she branched out into singing. Here she is accompanied by Kaan Karadavut (trumpet), Nihat Şensesli (piano) and Ekin Cengizkan (drums).

The inimitable Sibel Köse, dubbed ‘the Queen of European Jazz’, is a vocalist of outstanding talent. Last time I saw Sibel perform, I said the following:
Evrim Özşuca studied the cello at Bilkent University, Ankara, before graduating from Bilgi University, Istanbul, as a jazz vocalist. In 2005 she won both the Nardis Jazz Club’s Young Jazz Vocalists Competition and the International Young Jazz Vocalists Competition at the Nomme Jazz Festival in Estonia. This evening she is accompanied by Bulut Gülen (trombone), Önder Focan (guitar), Barış Öztürk (double bass) and Sarp Evren (drums).
