A Matter of Timing

Meltem Sırtıkara

March 28, 2014 – May 4, 2014

Mixer, Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa Mahallesi, Mumhane Caddesi No. 50, Beyoğlu, Istanbul

Meltem Sırtıkara’s work visualises the unavoidable effect of mass media on humans, centring around the concepts of communication, relationships and detachment. Figures in the artist’s compositions are in close proximity to each other, yet they are not engaged in dialogue. The tension is subtle but noticeable.

One of the fundamental matters in Sırtıkara’s work is individual alienation from him/herself and from his/her surroundings. Sırtıkara amplifies the ‘isolation’ of the figures using symbols referring to communication, such as telephones, letters and headphones. The figures frequently don blazers, bowties, gloves and hats: a style commonly associated with socially-idealised gender identities. The artist also employs dream-like backgrounds, in reds, blacks and whites. The contradiction between fragile nostalgia and contemporary ‘cool’ characters reveals the irony in a ‘matter of timing’.
