The powerhouse Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İstanbul Kültür Sanat Vakfı; İKSV) has been a pioneer of music, art, culture, theatre and film in Turkey for years. The quality of İKSV’s offerings is indisputable; the music, theatre and film festivals and art biennales only get better every year and still always manage to push the envelope in terms of artists and venues. İKSV, without question, has altered the landscape of arts and culture in Turkey. It is no surprise, then, that the new IKSV initiative, İKSV Alt Kat: Learning and Interaction Space, is poised to change the arts landscape of Turkey for the better. İKSV Alt Kat intends to directly reach children, youth and groups with limited access to culture and arts and to promote interaction between cultural professionals, non-governmental organisations, artists, trainers and viewers.

In order to build a participatory, inclusive, multicultural, multidisciplinary and accessible platform, İKSV Alt Kat will present an annual programme that includes workshops, art education programmes, lectures, screenings, exhibitions and other events in areas including music, cinema, theatre, design and visual arts.

One of the first major projects hosted by İKSV Alt Kat is the Birlikte Güçlü Sesler Chorus, part of the Istanbul Music Festival. The chorus brings children and youth with disabilities together with the Music for Peace Chorus (Barış İçin Müzik Korosu). On June 29 at 20.00, the chorus will perform a variety of classic Turkish songs at the outdoor Zorlu PSM Amfi. Part of the chorus will be singing, while others will be performing the songs in sign language.

Cornucopia had the opportunity to visit some of the Birlikte Güçlü Sesler Chorus rehearsals; there is no question of the success of İKSV Alt Kat. Music, art and performance should be accessible to everyone, and the joy felt by all the choir members (and their families) radiated throughout the room. The quality of the singing was impeccable, and the enthusiasm and musicality of those signing transformed the performance from a simple vocal experience to a multisensory delight. We can only hope that the chorus gets the chance at an encore performance later this year.

The Birlikte Güçlü Sesler Chorus is conducted by Zeynep Eren Kovankaya, and the translation of the songs into sign language and rhythm, harmony and choreography are produced by Buket Ela Demirel and İpek Aktaşlı.

The chorus is performing at Zorlu PSM Amfi at 20.00 on June 29, 2019. Attendance is free and open to all. The Birlikte Güçlü Sesler Chorus performance precedes another innovative musical show: Human Requiem, which will start at 21.00 at Zorlu PSM. We highly encourage everything to attend both performances. For more information about Human Requiem, please click here.
