- What’s On
Close Quarters is an exhibition focusing on contemporary photography in Turkey. Curated by Sena Çakırkaya, the show exhibits the works of 18 artists who have been selected by the Istanbul Modern Photography Advisory Board. The idea behind the exhibition was for the artists to create their own personal documentaries through different mediums such as videos, installations and prints.
In Close Quarters, the artists focus on their own lives and the personal situations which they encounter. Their personal narratives – their lives, close circles and memories, all materialised in photography – are exposed in an open sphere. By being subjected to different interpretations of the audience, the images use the power of ambiguity rather than an authoritative voice that dictates meaning. The monotony of everyday life becomes something more, something beautiful, with the charm of the ordinary finding new meanings and shapes in other people’s minds.
Artists include Sinan Tuncay and his piece ‘Mommy’s Not Home’ and Gözde Türkkan with her work, ‘Strange & Beautiful’.
