Wael Shawky

January 31, 2014 – March 8, 2014

Lisson Gallery, 27 and 52 Bell Street, London, NW1 5DA

One of the most important voices to emerge from the Middle East in the last decade, Wael Shawky presents his series Dictums, which includes a brand-new work being exhibited for the first time.

Dictums refers to a live performance originally produced for the Sharjah Biennial in 2013 in which Shawky assembled 30 workers of primarily Pakistani origin to clap and chant through a recital by two professional musicians or qawwals, trained in singing traditional Sufi ballads. With this sound piece and the accompanying documentary film, Dictums 10:120, which recalls the chapters of a holy text, Shawky manages to combine the sacred with the profane as he has done in his previous works.

In his new work, Dictums: Manqia I (2014), Shawky films camels in a desert near Abu Dhabi to chart patterns of physical, economic and intellectual migration in this region.
