- What’s On
New works by the veteran artist Koray Ariş, who delights with his musically-inspired sculptures.
Ariş’s interest in art began at an early age; his parents were both graduates of the Istanbul National Academy of Fine Arts. Throughout his childhood, Ariş crafted 3D objects and wooden sculptures. In 1963, he got accepted into the Istanbul National Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1968. Shortly after, he travelled to Italy to study under Emilio Greco. Ariş opened his first atelier in Rome in 1971. A year later, he held his first solo exhibition and in the few years to follow, his works were shown everywhere from Florence to Belgrade to Budapest. The artist returned to Turkey in 1975, and has been exhibiting in Istanbul and Ankara ever since.
Ariş’s last solo exhibition was held at Galeri Nev in 2009, followed by a retrospective show in 2012. Using leather and welt as his primary materials, the artist also experiments with other techniques and forms. Up until 1995, the artist made only figurative works, but in the last 20 years, he has been making abstract and animated figures.
This exhibition showcased Ariş’s new works, made between 2011 and 2014, and exhibited for the first time. Prices range from TL100,000 to TL150,000.
