- What’s On
Filmekimi is back again for another year and, as always, is screening select films that saw success on the international festival circuit.
Many of the films won prizes at this year’s major festivals. I, Daniel Blake, a film about the benefits system in England directed by Ken Loach, won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, while The Birth of a Nation, a gritty film about Nat Turner and the slave rebellion he led in 1831, won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance.
There are also numerous films made by big-name directors: Ron Howard’s documentary The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years will be screened, as will Voyage of Time – Life’s Journey, Terrence Malick’s documentary about the origins of the universe.
As for something a bit more light-hearted, Captain Fantastic is equal parts funny and poignant. Likewise, Wiener-Dog is a charming film that follows a dachshund as he’s passed from oddball owner to oddball owner.

Filmekimi will continue on to Ankara, Izmir, Bursa and Eskişehir after its run in Istanbul. Filmekimi will be held in Ankara from October 7–9, Izmir from October 13–16 and in Bursa and Eskişehir from October 21–23.
