Ali İbrahim Öcal

April 11, 2014 – May 3, 2014

Merkur Gallery, Mim Kemal Öke Caddesi 12, Erenler Apt D2, Nişantaşı, Istanbul

In his latest solo exhibition, the Turkish artist Ali İbrahim Öcal presents his rather distant and sometimes creepy hybrid images which explore the connection between the body and time, as well as nature and our cultural memory. Prices range from TL13,000 to TL19,000.

All the artworks look ordinary on the one hand, however, they also posses a kind of mythical aura. The paintings are heavily symbolic so when the viewer comes face to face with them, perception takes over interpretation. We are reminded of Romanticism and the feeling evoked is one akin to watching a trailer for a strange movie about nature.

The exhibition takes its title from one of the works in the exhibition, ‘Heaven’ (below). This is also one of the artist’s favourite works because it reveals his esoteric mood when he was producing it – he was in a meditative, praying state.
