Infamous Library

Işıl Eğrikavuk

April 17, 2014 – May 24, 2014

Rampa Istanbul, Şair Nedim Caddesi No 20, Kat -2, Akaretler, Beşiktaş

The Turkish artist Işıl Eğrikavuk creates fictional stories and situations that blur our perceptions of reality. In this exhibition, her video of the same name and an interactive installation she has specifically produced for this exhibition are displayed.

The video recounts the story of the abduction of 12 people in September 1980. These people were held captive in a library for two years and the video is filmed from the point of view of one of the abductees. For the 11th Istanbul Biennial, Eğrikavuk turned the video into a news article which was published in the Radikal and Hürriyet Daily News newspapers on September 12, 2009. Similarly to the video, the text was in the form of a news story told by one of the abductees and the newspapers were sold at news stands, as well as being disseminated at the biennial venue.
