The Anglo-Turkish Society presents an online lecture by Eve Lacey.
Eve Lacey will introduce The Eckstein Albums: a collection of photographs taken by a German Jewish migrant to the early Turkish Republic. These albums were donated to the Skilliter Centre for Ottoman Studies in 2018 and digitised in 2020. They offer unique insight into Turkish medical history and are now freely available to browse on Cambridge Digital Library.
An eminent paediatrician who fled the rise of Nazism, Albert Eckstein was also a gifted photographer and portraitist. He conducted a survey on maternal fertility and infant mortality as Director of the Paediatric service at Ankara Numune Hospital and used this commission to capture the social and economic realities of Anatolian village life in the 1930s.
Eve Lacey studied English at King’s College, Cambridge, and Library and Information Studies at University College London. She is Senior Library Assistant at Newnham College Library and Librarian at the Skilliter Centre Research Library and Archives.
