Contemporary Narratives from Turkey and Beyond

January 9, 2014 – June 8, 2014

Istanbul Modern, Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi, Antrepo No. 4, Tophane, Istanbul

Istanbul Modern turns 10 years old this year and will host a number of special exhibitions and events to celebrate. First in line is Neighbours, an exhibition focusing on contemporary art practices in Turkey and the surrounding region. The exhibition brings together 35 artists from 17 neighbouring geographies that have historical, political and/or cultural ties with Turkey (wider regional areas include the Balkans, the Caucasus and the Middle East).

Featuring visual artworks, as well as extensions of disciplines that have developed outside the academic circles of art, such as political cartoons and folk art, the exhibition will explore practices that relate to social life in the public space, such as spectacles and ceremonies, and the way these have seeped into modern visual arts. The exhibition focuses on two aspects: narratives and travel, which encompasses a number of sub-themes such as mobility, nomadism, odysseys, language, translation and cultural transmission.
