Organised by the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Initiative at NYU, this panel explores prominent figures and debates related to the Ottoman Mediterranean in order to assess our current understanding of the region’s relationship to the Empire.
The panelists are Joshua White, who asks if Malta may be considered a constituent part of the Ottoman Mediterranean, Marco Ali Spadaccini who examines the Ottoman merchants in Ancona in Italy, and Peter Kitlas who investigates the ambassadorial accounts (sefaretname) of two Ottoman embassies to Morocco in the mid-1780s to reassess the role of religion in Mediterranean diplomatcy. The chair, Oscar Aguirre-Mandujano, summarises. The panel is followed by a 30-minute Q&A session.
