- What’s On
‘Past and Future’, Istanbul Modern’s new permanent collection exhibition, looks at the transformation of modern and contemporary art in Turkey from its beginning to the present day. The exhibition is displayed in a chronological order to historically link how art museums are established as sites of memory, and to effectively look at the role they have in shaping the future by collecting and preserving art.
Museums are spaces which embody the dynamics of change in art, intellectual expansion, creative contexts, new modes of expression, and the visual and verbal legacies that artists inherit from one another. Museums have two primary goals: they fuel creativity and discovery, and they provide a rich collection of visual materials which can become potential resources for the future.
Around 180 works by 136 artists from the museum’s varied collection are displayed. These include :mentalKLINIK’s, a young art duo based in Istanbul whose reactionary art has stirred up the contemporary art world, 2011 piece, ‘Doublecherry’, and Canan Tolon’s piece, ‘Reflex 15’.
